The Brady Campaign

The Brady Campaign, probably the biggest threat to the ability of an American to protect themselves has published it's annual "grades" for State gun legislation and regulations. About 6 months ago the Department of Justice: Bureau of Justice Statistics released it's finalized numbers for Violent Crimes. Here are the numbers presented by both sides.

California:
Brady Ranking: 1 out of 50 (Best)
Brady Score: 79 (out of possible 100)
Brady, things that need to be fixed: State does not do ballistic fingerprinting; handguns not "childproof"; Gun dealers need better regulation; Non-Assault weapons need to be registered; firearms do not have to be reported if lost or stolen; consumer safetly standards are not harsh enough.
Population(estimate): 36,457,549
Violent Crimes: 191,025 (522.6 per 100,000 residents)
Murder/Manslaughter: 2,206 (6.2 per 100,000 residents)
Murders w/gun: 253 (11.5 percent of murders)

Okay, I guess that's not too bad, let's look at the lowest rated state now.

Kentucky:
Brady Ranking: 48 out of 50 (worst)*
Brady Score: 2 (out of possible 100)
Brady, things that need to be fixed: Everything, except for not forcing schools to allow firearms on campus (currently everyone gets 2 points for that)
Population(estimate): 4,206,074
Violent Crimes: 12,513 (295 per 100,000 residents)
Murder/Manslaughter: 204 (4.8 per 100,000 residents)
Murder w/gun: 17 (8.5 percent of murders)

Wait...it looks like I must have screwed up that data, but I didn't, check for yourself, the state that the Brady Campaign rates as being the safest (gun wise) has the more violent crimes than any other state, a higher murder rate that 46 of the 50 states, and a higher gun crime rate than any other state.
Kentucky on the other hand...has a murder rate higher than only 3 other states, less violent crimes (per capita) than all states, except 5, and here's a three again, a lower percantage of murders commited with a gun than all states, except 3.

So, are the basic statistics wrong? I guess you could argues that the goverment offices scewed the statistics to make states with lower gun control less violent, but that wouldn't do them any good, the more violence, the more power they have. Maybe there is just something fundamentally wrong with the Brady Campaign, whether it be ignorance, arrogance or outright lieing there is only one reason why they would do it, to convince people to give up their fundament right to not only protect themselves from people commiting violent crimes (that happens 2.5 million times a year in the US), but to protect themselves from a goverment that oversteps it's boundaries. I'll end this with a quote by one of the men that wanted to make sure that we would always be able to fend off invaders, right the wrongs of the political class, and protect our families.
"What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." Thomas Jefferson to James Madison
